Palawan

Hi there.

I'm currently looking to retire to the Philipinnes once I've sold up in not so sunny Scotland.

I've been doing research of the Philipinnes in general for about one year and already visited but only to Manila, Boracay and Palawan. From my research Palawan draws me.

I'm a pretty fit 51yr old male and have travelled the world compliments of Her Majesties Armed Forces so I get the differences in culture, safety etc.

What I'm looking for is advice as to the best way of living in the Philipinnes on a sensible but safe budget. Looking to spend a max of £100,000 on accomodation. I also have a military pension that comes in at about £1,000 before tax and this will almost double in 4 yrs. Using UK rules I'll get it all as we get over £10,000 tax allowance. I realise us white noses can't own a property but I've been led to believe we can lease land for 50yrs and get special powers of attorney giving me authority to do what I want with the land until the lease runs out. I plan on dying before I reach 100yrs old :-)

I'm looking to Palawan as a base as it appeals to me in remoteness but with the necessary facilities within a few hours if needed. Where on Palawan would someone recommend as a starting point? I don't drink often, don't smoke and never gamble. For passtimes I'm into my fitness, watersports and mountaineering.

I have a girlfriend who currently lives in Boracay but I'm playing safe to see how we progress before biting the bullet.

I've lived in the Belizean jungles for 6 months in the 80's so I understand the heat, humidity and no facilities but as I'm getting older it's nice to have the comforts. Ideally I'm looking for a modern property or a lot to build my own property that I'll gift if I pop my clogs by old age ( don't want to encourage other methods :-) ) Beach, or nice mountain view also.

What's the everage cost for such a property to buy pre built or if I was to employ and supervise the building of my own?

All the best
Davy
