Kian killing

You always wonder when something like this happens here whether it will lead to any fundamental change in policy.
But then you think back to the kllling of the Korean businessman,of the Leyte mayor in prison. Or to a number of other killings in the Drug War, often with videos on TV showing clear evidence of a "shoot first" policy. Never to be heard of again.

The Kian killing has also obscured the mass killings of over 50 drug suspects, which took place over a few days recently.

Then there is Marawi. The fighting is down to 3 barangays, 3 front lines, a number of buildings....

I've come to the conclusion that since the days of People Power, there's not much that can lead to major change in any policies in the Philippines, other than an election. Despite what goes on during their time it seems that Philippine Presidents and Governments generally maintain good public support whatever they do. or don't do. Benigno Aquino left office with a high level of support. The current President presently has a stellar level of support. The only recent President to greatly loose support during her term was Gloria Arroyo. Most of that loss was due to the economy.

At present the Philippine economy is doing well. However, the Peso is falling more than other Asian currencies against the US Dollar, with an inflationary effect. Government spending is set to rise on infrastructure and in social areas. Tax changes may stimulate growth, but will also add to inflation.

Unfortunately, a poorly performing economy in a couple of years time may be the only thing that can bring major political change?
