LIGURIA ADVICE PLEASE

Post New Topic

We are thinking of buying a small holiday home in Liguria, in one of the villages a few KMs inland, somewhere like Dolcedo or Dolceaqua.
We lived in Umbria and when we left in 2010 the Tigre zanzare was becoming a real problem.
Would anyone know what it is like in Liguria for Tigre zanzare? Are they active all year round as the winters are milder than in Toscana / Umbria.
Zanzare love us... so would be really helpful to hear from anyone who knows
Many thanks

Hello John, Well we've been in Liguria (La Spezia region) for 4+ years and mosquitos have never really been a problem...the area that you are interested in (Imperia and Savona) I have heard are more infested. I would be far more worried about traffic in that area...the highways are bumper to bumper with "big rigs" and the coastal roads are not at all pleasant drives. And Genoa...if you will need to go is going to be a major headache for years until the new bridge (connecting all north/south travel) is re-built. Our coast on the other hand is quite lovely with beautiful seaside towns and wonderful inland hill towns (we live 20 min from Levanto and the 5Terre) Shopping is good, market days in many larger towns, La Spezia has all medical and governmental requirements one would need. Pisa and the airport are c. 1 1/4hrs south. I tell all my friends now not to fly into Genoa...what used to be a 1 1/2hr trip to the airport is now c. 2-3hrs. Well, good luck with your search...would it be possible for you to rent for a few years to get the real feel of a place? Buon Anno!

Many thanks for the reply.
We had thought of the Savona / Imperia area as we have friends not far away in France and flights to Nice are very convenient and cheap!from our part of England. ( It would be a holiday home.

However, the area you suggest actually makes more sense, especially given we would want to rent it out in the summer.
We are planning to come out in April, any suggestions where would be a good place to base ourselves?
Thanks agan for your helpful comments.

Hello again John, My daughter lives in Lincoln and Stansted to Pisa is a piece of cake and often she gets a Ryanair for c. 36. So, where would I suggest: Levanto. Maybe not to buy because it would be pricey but it's so central to everything north/south and east. It's a lovely coastal town with good services yet small enough to be homey. And great train service both north and south. It might be a good base to start looking for just the right holiday home more inland. For instance, we are in Carro...20+/- min inland and the price of homes/apts drastically drop. We like being in the country but still only 10/15min from the autostrada and bigger services. There are many, many towns like this which you could explore easily and still be near the beauty of the coast.

If you google any towns that you have questions about and would like an opinion...if I've been there I'd be happy to respond. When we were looking to buy...that was a problem...you'd find a great house, great price on the web and in reality it was just in the wrong place...too far out, too desolate etc.

So, today it's sunny and almost springlike and we are off to walk Levanto and just look at the sea...you can easily access the 5Terre to the south and the walking tunnel to Framura to the north (was an old rr path that's been turned into a walking/bike path...gorgeous)

Happy New Year and good luck!

This is a terrible experience and I have to be honest it discourages me a bit !

Reading the article I think you have done everything right, yet it is so unfortunate how this story ends.

So do not rely on the Geometra real estate suggests - but this could've been slipped regardless.
