What advice do you have for expats having a baby in South Africa?

We asked expat moms who gave birth in South Africa about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said:

"To maybe go to Joburg. Though everything at the hospital in Piet Retief was great. The care was excellent," commented an expat living in Piet Retief, South Africa.

"If you want to have a natural birth(medically possible) go to midwifes. If you want to have a cs go to gynacologist the are specialist at that," said another expat in Johannesburg.

What are emergency services like?

"There are 3 private hospitals, all within a 20min drive. Blaauwberg (5min) Milnerton Medi Clinic (15min) Panorama Medi Clinic (20min) All three have A&E and provide top quality care," commented an expat living in Cape Town, South Africa.

"Within 5 minutes drive of an outstanding private hospital; another excellent private hospital is 15 minutes away," said another expat in Cape Town.

Are most prescription medications available in South Africa?

"Virtually all medications are available locally plus local generics some with and some without prescriptions. Cheap compared to other Countries. The equivalent (2014) of $4.50 for a box of 30 statins," commented an expat living in Cape Town, South Africa.

"Yes. Most require prescriptions and they are available at any pharmacy. Virtually all the expense is covered by our insurance policy," said another expat in Cape Town.
